2. Don't respond to phishing emails that claim you need to update your personal information. Always contact the company directly using phone numbers listed on your accounts.
3. Don't click on links that are phishing scams that take you to a website that has the look of a company. This is how phishing happens. You think you are on the company's website and you provide your personal information to identity thieves.
4. Tear up or shred any personal information you throw into the trash. Don't leave your mail in your mailbox. Consider getting a Post Office Box.
5. Don't carry your Social Security Card and risk losing it. Identity theft starts with getting any of your personal account numbers on credit cards or bills. Never be hasty in giving out your Social Security number

7. Monitor and review your credit report at least 3 times a year, order one free credit report from each credit bureau once a year to look for suspicious activity.
8. Look closely at your credit card statements for charges you didn't make. Consider just using one or two charge cards for any purchases instead of using too many store cards or charge cards.
