Zombie Debt Collectors, Can they threaten you?
Due to the number of consumer debts the last few years, a new type of predators called zombie debt collectors are on the prowl. "Zombie debt" is unpaid bills that are so old the statute of limitations in which a creditor can sue to recover the debt has expired. These third party debt collectors use harsh techniques to collect debts for just pennies on the dollar for debts. They may charge steep rates for consumers to pay off debts and use tactics may involve making embarrassing calls at work, cursing, threats of violence, and withdrawals from bank accounts. They may call excessively during the day to threaten. However, some zombie debt collectors are using illegal tactics to earn a profit collecting debts.
The last few years, the Federal Trade Commission received more complaints about debt collectors than any other industry. Zombie debt collectors buy lists that may have been sold several times and use harsh tactics to try to collect debts even from consumers who don't owe debts but may have a similar or same name or live in the same area. They may harass consumers who owe for debts so old they can't be sued for the debts in court or ruin a credit report. If the zombie debt collector can get some information by getting a small payment from the consumer they may even go so far as withdraw money from their bank account.
Why would zombie debt collectors use such harsh tactics. They strive to make a profit when they pay high prices for debt lists. Debt lists for consumers who owe credit card, medical, or utility debts. The Federal Trade Commission receives more complaints about debt collectors than any other industry. Zombie debt collectors should not be confused with other debt buyer companies who are nice, business like, and work hard to collect debts the right way - without harsh, illegal tactics. Report any debt collectors or zombie debt collectors who use harsh illegal tactics to threaten you to the Federal Trade Commission.
